From day one, I believed that people were overestimating the outcome of a potential Kurt Angle vs Shawn Michaels match-up, and I am sticking with my first instincts. Now, I'm not saying that Kurt Angle vs Shawn Michaels will be a complete bomb. These are both very experienced competitors who I'm sure will go out on the grandest stage of them all and get the job done, but the speculation I've seen for this match has been unbelievably farfetched.
People have predicted that this will be "the greatest WrestleMania match ever," or "the greatest match of all time." This will be far from any of that. These two men will most likely put on a three star competition, but anything better than that is highly unlikely. It's just such a strange clash of styles, and I do not think it will work out. These two men are the polar opposites of each other in the ring. Kurt Angle has become known for great technical wrestling, while HBK has no technical wrestling ability and has made a career out of being a phenomenal athlete. Two of HBK's greatest strengths are one, his amazing ability to sell and his extraordinary ring psychology, his ability to tell a story in the ring - both of which are most likely Angle's two largest flaws. Shawn Michaels best plays the man who is on the receiving end of the assault, the man who gets punished and then makes a dramatic comeback, and Angle is not great in the role of non-stop assault. There are so many things that I think will prevent this match from being great, let alone the greatest match in WrestleMania history.
I think people have been overestimating the fantastic ring work that will be provided in this match. The purpose of this match will not to be to do great in the ring, because they most likely will not, but rather to display an icon vs icon match. A past vs present type of thing that new fans love these days. Think back to Rock vs Hogan, just not quite as dramatic because these two didn't amount to the success that Dwayne and Terry did.
